Audiobook Narration

I’m an actor and book lover, and audiobook narrator and audiobook producer (working to ACX standards).

As a voice artist I initially shied away from long-form narration, then curiosity led to me to an audiobook narration project and everything came together! I found my acting skills were challenged, my love of stories stoked and that long sessions in my recording booth somehow just suited me.

I read a wide variety of books myself, from science fiction through contemporary women’s fiction (which we used to call Chick lit, maybe we still do?) prize winning contemporary novels, classics and non-fiction.

If you have a book you think my voice would suit to be your audiobook narrator, get in touch and let’s talk.

I’m happy to record an excerpt so you can hear how your text will sound with me narrating it - then we can discuss if you feel any changes are needed to the delivery and very soon your audiobook will be charming the ears of thousands more people.

Non-fiction

For non-fiction I especially love books that illuminate life. Books like ‘Breath’ by James Nestor that reveals how our breathing is so deeply connected to everything about us - and how most of us are doing it wrong! I love these ‘return to our true physical selves’ sort of exposés!

I’m never sure whether these books should be classified ‘Health and Wellness’ or ‘Self Help’. I think they are very much both.

I’m passionate about trail running, mostly mountain running because of where I live, so books about running and physical performance are really appealing to me and I own quite a lot!

As a parent I find books about confidence, resilience, using failure to do better etc are invaluable. They help me to frame my own life better, and pass on what I hope are helpful strategies to my kids.

Classic Fiction

I’m a Brit who went to Grammar School. I was raised on the classics and I thoroughly enjoy classic English and American fiction. One year when I had a terrible ‘flu, that lingered on with complications for months, I finally forced myself to get to the end of Wuthering Heights. What a beautiful piece of classic fiction - and how dreadful! No wonder I hadn’t made it to the end before!

My husband can’t understand how I can ‘wade through’ all that description and just well, language. I absolutely love it!

We have a good library of real books in our home - reduced a little over the years out of necessity (multiple international moves). But although I read a lot on Kindle, some books just need to be purchased in paper form and are awarded a place on the shelf!

I really enjoy brining characters to life and will either give your characters a subtle voice change to differentiate when they have dialogue, or go the full gammut and create distinct voices with accents, different pitches and prosody etc from children through to eccentric old ladies!

Children’s Fiction

Narrating children’s stories and children’s fiction gives me great joy. My own children are just about too old to be read to, though my youngest still appreciates it from time to time. I have lovely memories of all the fabulous picture books and early reader character-full books I read to them when they were smaller.

Recently I tapped back into my children’s fiction reading mojo, performing short stories for a story app for younger children.

Women’s Fiction

Quite often I’m reading two or three books , dipping in and out… as of writing I have been reading 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea for, er, well, a couple of years! Turns out it’s not entirely my cup of tea, but I’m determined to get to the end one day. I’m also reading the aforementioned ‘Breath’ and just ripped through one of women’s fiction writer Kerry Fisher’s books that I’d managed to miss before. Kerry Fisher is one of my go-to talented ‘Chick lit’ (I know, I’m a bit old-school) writers along with Amanda Prowse and others.

I love losing myself in quality women’s fiction and often read these sorts of books in a day on holiday, or over just a couple of days at home. A little humour, some relatable characters, sometimes some heartwarming romance and frequently some guy-wrenching moments and tears.

Why not! I’m so grateful to the authors who deliver their brilliance into this very-often-more-insightful-than-given-credit-for genre.
